Social media marketing requires daily effort and involvement. This
means it is definitely not a “set it and forget it” endeavor. The social
media landscape is constantly changing, and what worked a year ago may
not work today; this is why it is SO important to always be testing and
trying new strategies. To help you with this, I have put together this
list of 30 tips to improve your social media marketing!
30 Tips to Improve Your Social Media Marketing
- Incorporate images – always, always, always. We know that images result in increased engagement and conversions. So use images in your posts whenever possible!
- When sharing videos on Facebook, use Facebook’s native video uploader rather than YouTube for increased views and engagement on Facebook.
- Try a variety of content types, including links, long-form narratives, images, video, questions, etc. You never know what will work best with your audience until you try it!
- Schedule your social media posts: Use a tool like Hootsuite or Sprout Social to schedule your posts. Consistency is key with social media, and scheduling your posts can be a huge help.
- Analyze your Facebook Insights to see what types of posts result in the highest engagement with your audience. Once you have figured out what your audience likes, post more of it!
- Always use a call to action (CTA): Regardless of which platform you are using, it is important to always use a clear CTA. Let your fans and followers know what you want them to do next!
- Be authentic: Stand out from the competition by being honest, real and transparent. For more on this, check out my new book, Will The Real You Please Stand Up: Show Up, Be Authentic, and Prosper in Social Media.
- Make sure your profile photos represent your brand: This means no blurry or unfocused images, no group shots and please, no bathroom selfies!!!
- Build relationships with brand advocates: Spend some time nurturing relationships with your “super fans” and they will continue to sing your praises and help you grow your online presence!
- Achieve #1 rankings on Google using Pinterest: Here’s how!
- Stop being overly promotional: You can promote your services or products on social media, but do so sparingly. Social media is about building trust that ultimately leads to sales….not constantly trying to sell to your followers.
- Use Post Planner to find viral images to share.
- Be responsive: Tweeting, pinning and posting aren’t enough. Read and respond to comments and questions in a timely and professional manner.
- Learn and implement strategies for getting more retweets: Such as using mentions within your tweets, optimizing your tweet length and using images. For more easy strategies for getting retweets, download my free eBook, 23 Quick & Easy Ways To Get More Twitter Retweets.
- Make sure your LinkedIn page is complete and up-to-date: This is particularly important if you are a B2B company. This will be where potential customers or clients go to find out more about you so make sure it accurately represents you and your business!
- Recycle your content: Share your social media content at various times and on different networks to reach new followers and increase social sharing.
- Add value: Sharing other people’s content isn’t enough. Add your own insights to the conversation, and build your reputation as a go-to expert in your field.
- Periodically run a 15-minute social media audit to ensure you are using social media effectively.
- Use social media to drive people to your email list: Your email list is your most valuable online asset, so make sure you are using social media as a way to grow your subscriber base.
- Take some time to create a customer persona: A persona is a fictitious person who represents your ideal customer or client. Target all your social media posts to this person to increase relevancy.
- Use Twitter Lists to build relationships that turn into sales.
- Be consistent across your social media accounts: Your images, colors and voice should be consistent no matter which platform you are using.
- Focus on helping your followers: Rather than thinking about what you want to say to them, think about what they NEED to hear. Help them solve a problem, answer a question or give advice to help them reach their goals.
- Think about how social media fits into your marketing funnel: How will all your efforts on social media help you accomplish your marketing and sales goals? Spend some time figuring out how social media fits into the bigger picture.
- Use relevant hashtags so people outside your current sphere of followers can find your tweets, images and posts.
- Find out what people are saying about your business by monitoring brand mentions using a tool like Social Mention.
- Be personal: More and more, people want to buy from people they know and trust, not nameless, faceless brands. Share personal stories and opinions from time to time to show there is a real person behind your business.
- Always respond to mentions and tags: Social media is a two-way street, so make sure you are monitoring and responding when someone calls you out!
- Focus on your most productive channels rather than spreading yourself too thin: If you are feeling overwhelmed by social media, choose 2-3 networks you can focus your energy on, rather than doing 6 poorly.
- Tweet at the optimal times to increase reach and engagement: A tool like Followerwonk can help with this.
