You may or may not have heard by now about Facebook hashtags. Or
maybe you have just seen more and more people using the hashtag symbol
(#) in their postings and have wondered why in the world are people
using this Twitter technique, right?
Well…in case you haven’t heard, hashtags have come to Facebook! And there are a number of great articles that came out over the last week that talked about how to use them.
But I want to talk about why hashtags should be a powerful
part of your online marketing strategy! Because sometimes just knowing
how to do something isn’t enough to help you do it as well as possible,
right? <grin> You don’t want to just be monkey-see-monkey-do
when it comes to social media marketing – you want to know without a
doubt you are using the right strategy in the right situation.
So here’s my take on some of the most important reasons you should be using Facebook Hashtags.
1. You’ll reach a larger audience
This is one of the biggest reasons to become familiar with the new
Facebook hashtags feature. Some researchers report that there are
approximately 88-100 million people engaging on Facebook during
prime time television, for example. Using Facebook hashtags
strategically allows you to expand your reach to people who might not
yet be aware of your brand.
2. You can join the conversation about your brand
Using hashtags in your own postings and staying on top of relevant
hashtags that are posted lets you drive buzz about your brand as well as
staying on top of what people are saying about your brand. This is one
way to prevent or lessen the impact of social media mishaps.
3. You can connect your marketing across campaigns
If you are using hashtags strategically across your social platforms,
you can use the same hashtags and keep your campaigns linked. Twitter
uses them, of course, but so do many other social platforms (including
Vine, as announced this week). The list of services using them is
GROWING! So it’s important to stay up to date!
4. You can create buzz at brand events
Creating a custom hashtag at an event and promoting it to attendees
is one way of helping to boost your brand’s buzz online. This can often
help boost the number of likes on your brand’s Facebook page. Using
hashtags as part of an event marketing strategy is a GREAT way to gain
attention for your brand, services, or products. Just sayin’!
5. You can create greater engagement for your brand
Used strategically, hashtags are a great way to create greater
visibility and engagement for your brand. Increasing your exposure and
on social media platforms such as Facebook is a good thing – not just
because it increases your appearance in your fans’ News Feeds (though
that’s a good reason too!). It also helps because as people click on the
Hashtags and go to a page of content specific to that hashtag, they’re
more likely to get involved in a conversation about something important
to them. This means they’re also more likely to “like” and “comment” on
your postings as well. And this kind of conversation with a brand can
help foster a sense of brand loyalty that lasts for a long time.
